WILL YOU TAKE A FIREWALK CHALLENGE TO HELP LONELY OLDER PEOPLE IN BUCKS?
Local charity Age UK Buckinghamshire is looking for individuals and groups of friends or work colleagues to take up their Firewalk challenge and walk across 800 degree hot coals to help end the loneliness of older and vulnerable people living alone in Bucks.
Many older people who live alone see no-one for days, or even weeks, which can be especially hard at Christmas time. The sponsorship money collected will go towards the charity’s Befriending Plus service, where volunteers provide regular home visits as well as practical assistance such as help with transport to the doctors and shops.
Last year’s Firewalk raised £4,500 and this year Age UK Bucks has set a target of £10,000! People are being encouraged to bring along their family and friends to give them as much encouragement as possible when they take the challenge!
As for the hot coals, there’s no need to be apprehensive, as a professional company which specialises in fire and glass walks runs the event and everyone is mentally prepared beforehand with help to overcome any fears. Afterwards participants will get a double sense of personal achievement; proud to have completed the challenge and also to have raised money to help vulnerable people.
The Firewalk Challenge takes place on Friday 21 November at 6.00pm at Colston Hall. Visit www.ageuk.org.uk/buckinghamshire or call Riah on 01296 431911 to register.
The office will be open Monday to Friday from 9am – 4pm.
